The GOAL Project

About

GOAL is a H2020 EC project that will deliver a platform to foster an ecosystem of games and applications that help people stay motivated to lead socially engaged, physically and cognitively active lifestyles. The platform will benefit both players and third-party game developers. Players get to play their favorite games while at the same time working on their healthy lifestyles. Where certain GOAL games or applications will reward users for healthy behavior, others allow the user to spend their earned GOAL Coins on virtual or real rewards. GOAL applications can reward among other, social interactions, physical activity, and cognitive training, teamwork, and competition. On the other hand, game developers benefit by being able to leverage an easy to use platform that, when integrated into their games, provides out-of-the-box added value for their users’ healthy lifestyle. By leveraging the GOAL platform, game developers can focus on their strengths: to develop fun, engaging experiences for their users.

The GOAL Platform

The GOAL platform is exposed via the GOAL API to the GOAL apps. The platform consists of the core functionalities (account management, virtual reward system and activity recognition) and the tools for social inclusion (the social marketplace) and for healthy behavior (the goal setting service and the motivational agent). The GOAL apps are games functioning as GOAL Coin Generators and/or Spenders.

The benefits of the platform will be demonstrated in particular for elderly end users (players) by creating a set of games and applications that leverage and demonstrate the added value of the platform to this user group. The demonstration will focus on the development and integration of a number of COIN Generators and COIN Spenders that provide a minimal ecosystem stimulating physical activity, social inclusion, and fun.

Transforming Games into Health Apps

In GOAL we are stimulating healthy behavior through gaming, targeting an elderly user group, but eventually building a platform that is attractive for all types of users. In short we are combining gaming and motivational aspects. In this part we will address the questions: what is the right game for each individual user? and what is the right motivation strategy for each user?
